Great Lakes Captains from Henderson Area

About the author

John Loren Geeson was born Feb. 15, 1890 in Henderson, NY. He resided on a farm at what is now Town Barn Road. His father and uncles owned a cabin on Rays Bay and he and his brother Bill would journey by horse and buggy to spend many a day enjoying Lake Ontario. This is when John developed a love for the lake. Work on the farm interrupted his education but John was determined and graduated from Henderson Union School in 1911 at the age of 21. John's love for the lakes compeled him to seek employment in the shipping trade. As he had an uncle that was a lake captain it was made possible for him to achieve his goals at times. John became an electrical journyman and worked in the electrical trade. During World War I he served in the Army Corps of Engineers and spent time in France. After the war John continued as an electrician and worked for various companies, concluding his career as chief electrician on the Rackette River Power Project in 1956. John was an active member of the Masonic Lodge and rose to the level of 33rd degree on May 1st, 1919. He married Mary Jane Hicks Maycumber on Christmas Day 1928. He resided for most of his life at the cabin (by then remodeled into a home) on Rays Bay. John passed away on August 16, 1975 at age 85.
